French Pear Pie Recipe
Thanks to my friend Megan, I had lots of fresh pears from her pear tree to make a yummy pie. Let me tell you first off that I'm not the biggest fan of pears. And secondly, I asked Megan if I could have some since she was offering them. I don't want to come off sounding unthankful. Instead I wanted to challenge myself to see if I could make something yummy out of them.
I don't know if my dislike for pears comes from the memory of me as a child choking down canned pears while I held my nose and washed it down with milk. But mostly I think it's the consistency of the grit in the fruit. It does have crunchy little particles in them that kind of creeps me out. So I thought by baking the pears and making them softer it would help. Also this pie has a crumble top so the crunch of the top helps mask the crunch of the gritty pear texture. I've got to say, I really do love this pie. I CAN eat it without holding my nose or washing it down with something to drink. Wahoo! Now if I can only accomplish that with rhubarb!French Pear pie
Ingredients:6 cups fresh sliced pears2 tablespoons lime juice (originally called for lemon but I didn't have any so I substituted lime2/3 cup sugar1/4 teaspoon ground ginger1/2 cinnamon2 tablespoons all-purpose flour1 unbaked pastry shell, 9-inch (I used a store bought crust and rolled it out)Crumb Topping1/2 cup butter1/2 cup brown sugar1 cup flour
Mix sliced pears with lime juice, sugar, ginger, cinnamon, and flour. Place mixture in pastry-lined pie plate. For the topping, mix together the butter and brown sugar and stir in flour. Spread topping over pears in the pie shell. Bake pie at 375° for 45 minutes, or until pears are tender and topping is nicely browned.Labels: recipe
