Tackle it Tuesday—Deep Cleaning the Carpets

My number one challenge as a mom is keeping things clean.  I find no pleasure in cleaning. Yes I love it when it’s clean, I just don’t like being the person who has to clean, wipe and disinfect. Keeping up with my busy family is hard. But today I tackled the carpet grime. No longer does our carpet look like a teenager plagued by acne. Instead it’s soft underfoot and (mostly) uniform in color. Hooray for my home carpet cleaner and hooray for clean (at least for the next few hours).

There’s something rewarding yet disgusting seeing how much dirt is removed from the steam cleaner. Yucky!

Check out my newest little creation. This charming little pendant makes me dream of green pastures and peace. Doesn’t that sounds good right about now? Sigh!

Okay, now I’m signing off to go list it on Etsy.

Tackle it Tuesday, Tales of a Clothing Huntress

bins

Posted via Jessica’s Blog

Spotting the clearance rack, my heart pounds, my palms sweat, and my feet move me swiftly to my target. I scan quickly for a tag which reveals my reward. I am ruthless and cunning, I am the Clothing Huntress!

Okay, back to reality. One of the many ways I’ve save money for my family is clearance and thrift shopping for clothing. If you have a child at home, you know how fast little ones grow. My kids are finally slowing down a bit, however I still get a thrill of stocking up on clothing after the season is over. I usually save 80% off the ticket price of clothes and my kids are excited to open their clothing bin and find a whole new wardrobe of colors and styles. The only downside of this technique is storage and size prediction. Ya gotta have a place to store these clothes bins and you have to be able to estimate what size your child will be the next year. I’m horrible about predicting shoe size (hey, I’m the Clothing Huntress, not a foot fortune teller) so I never buy shoes one year in advance. But everything else is fair game (read prey).

Today I went through all the newly acquired clothing, sorted it out, and put the bins away for the next season. I have a two bins for each child. One for summer and one for winter.

Here’s some major scores I found this weekend at the outlet mall in Lincoln City.

1499Regularly $14.99. Got it for $2.99 (80% off)

1950Regularly $19.50. Final price $1.99 (90% off)

I don’t usually go to outlet malls thinking that I’m getting deals, however when items have been marked down a couple of times, I then start considering it.

And I also like heading to local thrift stores. I found this GAP skirt at Value Village for only $1.50.

I never pay full sticker price on clothes and I don’t think you should either. Here’s some ways I save:

1. Shop around on websites to see when things are getting marked down.
2. After the season is over, walk to the back of the store to find clearance racks.
3. Do a google search for coupons and promo codes for the store you want to purchase at. I often find 15% off entire purchase deals online.
4. Make a list of items that you need and already have so you don’t double up.
5. Swap clothing with friends who have children that are smaller or bigger than yours.
6. Make sure buttons button and zipper zip up (tug to make sure zippers stay intact), especially at thrift stores.
7. Go in with a plan but be open minded. There’s no way to predict what’s super affordable the day you stop by.
8. Know when your local store marks things down, if you don’t know, ask.
9. If you have different sex children try buying items that can be worn by either sex.
10. Repurpose. If your younger daughter doesn’t like the plain jeans that have been handed down to her, she can always add rhinestones or trim to make them her own.
11. Make hand-me-downs fun. Set up a store and let your kids try on hand-me-downs at home. Put on some music and have a fashion show or hand out pretend cash for their purchases.
12. Check local listings on craigslist and the newspaper for buying clothing second hand.

Most of all, enjoy the thrill of a deal! Bask in the glory of a good shopping expedition. And remember hunting and gathering is not a thing of the past, it’s just evolved a bit.

Help Haiti, a child’s plea

Posted via Jessica’s Blog

A touching thing happened at my daughter’s school the other day. When I was giving her morning kiss goodbye, she brought up the most adorable plea to action ever, an invitation from one of her fellow students.

Here is what it looked like….

Just in case you need a 1st grade translation, here is how it reads,

Donate Money

I was so touched by the little boy’s thoughtfulness in sending out this invitation to his friends for food and money for the people of Haiti. It brings tears to my eyes to see such kindness and love through the eyes of a child and inspires me to know that each little act of kindness can snowball into something very meaningful to others. Amazing!

Auction at the Vineyard

I wanted to share with you some of the work I’ve been creating  lately. Creative Discoveries Preschool is happy to announce it’s annual spring auction. This year, the fund-raising committee found a beautiful location to hold the event, at Orchard Heights Winery right here in Salem. The event is adult only (exceptions are made for infants) with wine tasting, a brunch, raffle, and both silent and live auctions. With that in mind, I wanted to come up with some soothing imagery for the promotional material.

Vineyard Hills

I decided to to start off with a painting of some rolling hills on a pretty sunny day and this is how it turned out. I’ll donate the painting to the silent auction plus I was able to use it in the promotional designs. So now I can cross two things off my list!

And here are the flyers, postcards and tickets that will be given out. Can’t wait to see them printed up!

Tackle it Tuesday

It’s not too hard to find projects to do in our 1920’s house. This weekend we fixed our leaking shower (only after a good hour of trying to remove a cartridge that just wouldn’t budge).  We are also trying to figure out a leak by our window seat. Definitely too big of a job for a Tackle it Tuesday post. Today, I decided to work on something less scary and doable.

Bar Stool Makeover

I’ve wanted to do something with our bar stools for some time now. The kids use them at snack time and breakfast, and they are due for a mini makeover. They are just plain nasty now.  The seat is ripping and the wood has been dinged. A friend of mine suggested recovering the top in a fun oil cloth. Since then I have kept my eye open for fun oil cloth prints. Our local fabric store doesn’t have a great selection so I started searching online. I found an amazing Etsy shop called The Fabric Farm. They had tons of different prints to choose from. I settled on a graphic black and white print.

Picture 400I gathered all of my tools:

  • Screwdriver
  • Staples
  • Staple Gun
  • Oil cloth
  • Scissors

Off to work I went recovering the seat. After I was done I didn’t like the oilcloth with the stained wood so I decided to paint it shinny black. After a few coats and sanding, they are ready to be used for a few more years.

Love is in the Air

Valentine's Day

I remember loving Valentine’s Day as a kid. The cards, candy and parties were awesome and I always had fun trying to decipher the meaning of the conversation hearts I received in my valentines. The magic wore off in High School and then came to a complete halt in college.

But now, I get to see Valentine’s Day through my childrens’ eyes.  With Sam Cooke playing in the background we put together Valentines for classmates and teachers and what fun we had! I asked Little Man earlier what he thought his fellow preschoolers would like for Valentine’s Day and he replied “sticks”. I scoffed a bit but then realized, yeah, it’s true those kiddos would like a stick…and maybe a painted stick would be perfect. Don’t ya just love a budget friendly craft? So Little Man and I took off on a stick gathering walk.  Little Missy helped spray paint and decorate the sticks. We also made a little poem to go along with it.

For Little Missy, she requested candy. I had little heart shaped hinged tin thanks to Big Lots closeout of Martha Stewart party supplies. Gotta love my friend Kim who tipped me off to the closeout deal…only $2 for 24! We added a picture of Little Missy on a doiley and some skittles inside.

For the teachers we decided to buy some suet bird feaders and put suet cakes inside so they could spread the love to the hungry birds outside. We thought that would be a good idea for those teachers who are dieting.

So off we go to school tomorrow with goodies in hand. Little Man has a party planned at his school and Little Missy has both a party as well as a lunch date planned at the school cafeteria with the whole family. It’s so very nice to spend some extra time with the kids and share the love.
